Chapter 1…..Here we go!

What a way to start the 2021 tour. After taking 18 months off from large community painting on the road, it finally started to feel safe enough to get back out there. After giving Petunia the bus a fresh paint job, we hit the road. Leaving from Perkasie Pennsylvania, I wanted to drive as far away as possible from the east coast and check a few west coast states off the list.

After driving for 10 days through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana and Idaho, seeing some of the most beautiful scenery of my life, I finally arrived in Portland Oregon.

The plan from the start of the trip was to find a place in Portland to install some funky flowers. After a few days of no takers combined with the struggles of finding overnight parking (the dreaded 2am knock two night in a row) I decided to drive south down the coast and look for a smaller coastal town. It didn’t take long before I found myself walking up and down the streets of Newport, Or asking every shop owner if I could paint some flowers for them. It took 3 full day and several warm leads before I walked into the Coffee House Restaurant and started talking to some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. They let me park up next to their restaurant and kept me well fed the entire time I was there. We opened up the community painting day to all patrons and anyone who happened to new walking down the street. If you glanced at the wall, we threw a paintbrush in your hand.

Usually we have a strict “flowers only” policy but I made and exception and we included their awesome coffee man mascot to the design!

This was a perfect way to start the west coast tour. I’ve said it before but by far the best part about traveling is the people you meet. It started with a flower painting and ended with an invite to visit their family in Mexico. So stay tuned, the TTFP might be expanding across the border in the rear future!
