Mural number 39 baby!! This is the last mural in Pennsylvania before heading back out on the road and I couldn’t be happier with my time at SCSC. We began work on this mural in January of 2021. Sara Rinell, a teacher at SCSC, reached out to see if we could bring the whole school together to pay tribute to the school’s founder, Wendy Ormsby, who passed away last fall.

There was already a mural on the fence in question, and while I never like painting over another artist's work, after years of facing the elements, it was in pretty bad shape and was in need of a little face lift. So after the fence was power washed and sanded down to the original wood, I picked up some fresh paint from the local Sherwin Williams, it was off to the races!

Over the course of 5 days, we worked to bring the mural to life with the help of over 150 students. It’s always a little nerve wracking painting a mural where the background doesn’t get painted over… in this case the wooden fence. Any drips or outside-the-line painting won’t get painted over and is a lot harder to remove. That being said, with the exception of a few small touch-ups with some sandpaper, the paint stayed where it was supposed to and everyone did a fantastic job!

After the students finished filling everything in, I got to work outlining and painting the banner.

While I unfortunately never got to meet Wendy in person, I feel as though I did in a way. During my time on the wall, seeing the respect and care everyone had towards the project, I felt welcomed immediately into the SCSC family by all of the students and faculty. It’s clear that everyone there takes pride in their school and it’s easy to see why. This is an installation I won’t soon forget.

What is it like painting with the Ten Thousand Flowers Project?
